Tech Clean California Launches Air-to-Water Heat Pump Rebate Program

We're thrilled to share the fantastic news that Tech Clean California has joined the list of states to develeop a rebate program specificly for single family air-to-water heat pump systems. We are proud to announce that our highly efficient 4- and 5-ton Solstice R32 models qualify for this valuable program. This means that Californian HVAC professionals can now offer their clients substantial savings: $2,500 for heating-only systems and an incredible $10,000 for combination systems that provide both space and water heating.

Air-to-water heat pumps are a cutting-edge solution for space heating and domestic hot water needs. These highly efficient systems transfer heat from the outside air to water and are designed to work in a wide range of climates. Could it be that Air-to-Water Heat Pumps (AWHP) using hydronic distribution are poised to become the new normal for residential HVAC systems? Can simply switching the thermal distribution fluid from refrigerant to water/glycol have significant positive impacts? As you will learn in this interview with Jim Bashford from SpacePak, the short answer to these questions may well be, simply, Yes.

You don’t have to be a building nerd or an engineer for a question like this to be relevant and important to consider. There are many reasons why AWHP systems make an attractive alternative to our batch of current “normal” heat pumps that rely on refrigerant for thermal distribution. Some of the reasons AWHP are appealing include: (1) reduced refrigerant volumes, thus reduced refrigerant leakage into the atmosphere; (2) larger selection of indoor unit options relative to refrigerant based systems; (3) the ability to support comfort via thermally active surfaces (aka radiant heating/cooling); (4) your home is better future-proofed and more technology-agnostic, and (5) these systems affordably unlock thermal storage (for thermal loads), which can provide energy resilience for their owners as well as dispatchable grid-level energy storage This episode is why you listen to the Building Science Podcast, somehow this multifaceted emerging story has still not hit the mainstream.

Air-to-Water Heat Pump Rebate Programs

Thanks to the growing awareness and recognition of air-to-water heat pumps as a promising technology with the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, an increasing number of utility company's are establishing rebate programs with significant cash incentives specfically for the air-to-water category of heat pump technology.

In 2019 the EPA recognized this potential of cold climate air-to-water heat pump technology when they selected it for the 2019 - 2020 ENERGY STAR Emerging Technology Award category, in an effort to increase awareness, and accelerate the adoption and performance standardization process.

The following list of air-to-water rebate programs is not comprehensive. If you are looking to establish a new air-to-water heat pump rebate program, add one to this list, or request more information, please feel free to contact the SpacePak Team directly or your local SpacePak Manufacturer's Representative.

New Warranty Policy effective as of 2/1/2021: Bulletin #21.3SP

Products sold prior to 2/1/21 carry original warranty from the date of installation.

All warranties begin on the date of installation and apply only to the original owner of the equipment.

All equipment must be registered via the Product Registration portal on the SpacePak webiste.

A licensed contractor or distributor will need to speak with Technical Service first for troubleshooting and to obtain a call log number.

project/equipment must be registered via the Product Registration Form on the SpacePak website
installation must have been performed by a SpacePak Certified Contractor in good standing at the time of installation

SpacePak Air-to-Water Heat Pumps (Inverter Series Only*)

Non-certified contractor installations will receive a two (2) year parts and five (5) year compressor warranty
SpacePak Certified Contractor installations will receive a five (5) year parts and a ten (10) year compressor warranty

*For any Solstice Heat Pump equipment that is non-inverter, please refer to warranty located in the equipment original installation manual.

SpacePak Small Duct High Velocity, Hydronic Fan Coils and Associated Equipment

Non-certified contractor installations will receive a one (1) year parts warranty
SpacePak Certified Contractor installations will receive a five (5) year parts warranty

SpacePak Buffer Tanks

A standard ten (10) year warranty will be issued on all buffer tanks from the date of installation to the original owner

As we close out our 2019 Reed Institute training initiatives we’d like to thank those of you who attended. We greatly value the time you spent with us to learning about SpacePak's total comfort systems.

The dynamic class gave attendees complete exposure to SpacePak's high efficiency product offerings. From product operation and application to hands-on tutorials covering all aspects of installation, design and layout including "tips and tricks" only our experts at SpacePak can provide. Attendees become “factory authorized” installers and are eligible to receive leads generated by SpacePak marketing initiatives as well as an extended 5-year warranty on their installations.'

Each of our four training classes this year reached maximum capacity so for those of you who were not able to secure a spot, we invite you to join us in 2020. The purpose for the EPA's Emerging Technology Award is to accelerate the awareness and adoption of new or under-exposed technologies that have the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Product category's EPA defines as an Emerging Technology do not yet have established Energy Star programs, the purpose for the ET award is to identify and recognize the technologies that should have an Energy Star porgram and aims to serve as a pre-cursor for one to be developed. One entity helping support our mission is the first-of-its-kind statewide utility, Efficiency Vermont. An organization leading the cause at the state level to “democratize fighting climate change” so that increasing comfort, saving on energy bills, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions is available to residents of all income levels.

Vermont residents can earn up $6,500 cash back for air-to-water heat pump installations:

$1000/ton rebate (maximum of 6 tons)
$500 bonus rebate for income-eligible Vermonters

As the industry leader in Air-to-Water Heat Pump technology, we are ecstatic to start seeing our LAHP (low-ambient heat pump) or “cold climate” hydronic heat pump recognized at the institutional level for its industry leading performance capabilities. Since introducing air-to-water heat pumps to the North American Market in 2011, SpacePak has been spearheading the campaign for environmentally friendly hydronic heating and cooling with our Solstice Series Air-to-Water Heat Pumps.

As our hydronic trainings and number of air-to-water installations continue to grow into the thousands, so is the awareness, adoption, and types of applications. We are now seeing interest being sparked at both the state and federal levels from groups pursuing net zero energy and sustainability initiatives.

What is COP?

The efficiency of a heat pump is measured by its Coefficient of Performance (COP), which is a ratio of energy input vs. energy output. The higher the COP, the more efficient a heat pump is, the less energy it consumes, and the more cost-effective it is to operate.

At -5 °F (-20 °C), SpacePak’s Solstice Extreme has a COP greater than 2. This effectively means that even on the coldest day, for every 1 Kw of energy our heat pump uses, it produces 2 Kw of heat energy. And as the temperature rises, so does the Solstice Extreme’s efficiency.

The estimated annual COP of a typical SpacePak air-to-water system is 3. This means that your heating system runs at an estimated annual average efficiency of 300%. Compared to traditional electric resistance baseboard which has a COP of 1, a SpacePak air-to-water heat pump is 3 times more efficient.
